A denture is a removable dental appliance that helps to restore a missing tooth. A denture consists of a prosthetic tooth attached to a plastic base. The plastic base is designed to look like gums. They are custom-made for every patient.
The two types of dentures are partial dentures and complete dentures. Both types of dentures are removable.
Partial dentures are used when some teeth are missing, and many healthy teeth remain. This type of denture is custom-fit to your mouth. They consist of replacement teeth attached to a metal frame that clasps onto specific healthy teeth.
Complete dentures are the restorations used to replace whole arches of missing teeth. This type of denture is custom-fit to your mouth and can replace all your teeth. They consist of artificial teeth attached to a plastic base that is colored like gums.
During your denture procedure, the crowns of your teeth are removed, and your body is allowed to heal. This healing process can take several months. Once your jawbone is healed, we will fit you with a temporary set of dentures.
Once your jawbone has completely healed, you will return to our office to have your customized permanent dentures placed. These dentures will be custom crafted to fit your mouth comfortably.
While dentures are easy to maintain, there are a few steps that you’ll want to take to keep your dentures looking their best.
First, you’ll want to brush your dentures every day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush your dentures twice a day. While brushing, be sure to brush your gums as well.
You’ll also want to use a denture cleaning solution to help remove stains and plaque. This solution will also help keep your dentures sanitized.
